Susan Schaeffler, Executive Director and Founding Principal of KIPP DC in Washington DC, will appear on a discussion panel on a cable television broadcast produced monthly by the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Doris Wilson, Superintendent of Desert Sands Unified School District; Michael Bell, Assistant Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools; and Catherine Hill, citizen activist for DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, will join Ms. Schaeffler on the panel.

This May edition of Education News is entitled "New Tools for Parents: Getting Informed and Getting Involved," and will discuss issues of choice in the school system.

Opened in 2001 by Susan Schaeffler, KIPP DC: Key Academy is the highest performing public middle school in Washington DC. Last year’s eighth grade class jumped from the 40th percentile to the 89th percentile in math alone between their fifth and eighth grade year as measured by the Stanford-9, a national norm-referenced test. 100 percent of the student body is African American, and 80 percent qualify for the federal free or reduced-price meals program. In 2005, KIPP DC: AIM Academy opened with its first 5th grade class. A third school, KIPP DC: WILL Academy, is slated to open in July.
