  • Eighth Grade English teacher, David Ayala, was honored with the Kinder Award for excellence in teaching.
  • Brian Stoffel, computer & technology teacher, was a finalist for the DCPS Outstanding First Year Teacher Award.
  • Nathan Franz, sixth grade science and social studies teacher, was the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Clinton, MD.
  • Spanish teacher Melissa Cline both won the Kimsey Award and was a finalist for the Washington Post Agnes Meyer Excellence in Teaching Award.
  • Fifth grade reading teacher Mekia Love won the Galleher Award.
  • Wren Gadwa, fifth grade writing teacher, was a finalist for the American Stars in Teaching Award.
  • KIPP DC: KEY Academy was given the Mayor's High Performance award for the school year 2004-2005.
  • KIPP DC was awarded grants totaling nearly two million dollars, including grants from City Build, Cafritz Foundation, Cove Point Foundation, OFG Facilities and the AOL, Aspires Fund.
  • Students were accepted at area high schools including: Banneker, DeMatha, McNamara, Sidwell Friends, Madeira, St. Albans, Phillips Andover, and Deerfield Academy.
  • Laura Bowen, vice principal, was accepted into the Fisher Fellowship Program to help expand KIPP DC to the elementary level.
  • Students participated in a variety of selective summer programs and internships, including Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY), Junior National Youth Leadership Conference, Student Environmental Development Program, Shaw Eco-Village, Books 'N Hoops, Sidwell Summer, KIPP National Student Leadership Conference, Horton's Kids and the Youth Service Opportunity Project (YSOP).
  • Girls' Basketball was the first runner up in the Public Charter School Athletic League Championships.
  • We were featured in articles in the Washington Post, Washington Times, New York Times, and USA Today, as well as The Oprah Winfrey Show
  • We were featured as an example of an exceptionally high-performing middle school in the report "Mayhem in the Middle" by Cheri Yecke.
  • We were recipients of the runners up award for Charity Works Foundation Grant.
  • The seventh and eighth grade football team finished in second place in the Public Charter School Athletic League.
