Sarah Hayes is KEY Academy's Principal. Sarah was one of the four founding teachers of KEY Academy and served as the Vice Principal from 2003 – 2005. In her first year at KEY, Ms. Hayes' fifth grade math students posted gains that overwhelmingly outpaced those of any D.C. public middle school. Because of the successes of her students, Ms. Hayes won the prestigious Kinder Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003. Before joining KEY, Ms. Hayes was a part of the Teach for America corps at Moten Elementary. At Moten, she co-founded the PTA and served as the group's treasurer, worked on the school's restructuring team, advised the student government and environmental club, and coordinated an after-school tutorial program. Ms. Hayes earned a B.A. in public policy and American institutions with a focus in education policy from Brown University.
