The Benefits of Giving to KIPP DC

How We Use Our Funds

Because KIPP DC’s schools operate a unique academic program we rely on funding from grants and private donations to supplement public funds. Additional funding helps to pay for our unique programming, which includes:

• More time in the classroom for academic excellence –- we provide 65% more instruction time than a traditional public school;
• Saturday school enrichment classes which have included: ballet, basketball, chess, lacrosse, community service, and yearbook;
• Real-world experiences during extended field lessons, providing hands-on learning, acquisition of new skills, and team building.
• Outstanding professional development for our staff;
• High school and scholarship application instruction and support from our High School Placement and Alumni Relations office.

Our Greatest Needs

Our fundraising priorities are simple -- additional resources needed to help support our unique program. The following are KIPP DC's two areas of greatest need:

1. Our teachers are KIPP DC's greatest asset. KIPP DC recruits the most talented teachers in the country to teach the hardest working students in DC. Their commitment to providing an extended school day, week, and year is critical to our students' academic growth. In 2005-2006, personnel costs were our largest category expense making up over 50% of our overall budget. Support in this area will enable us to continue to hire excellent teachers, who will in turn enable our students' outstanding achievement.
2. Provide quality academic environments for quality education. KIPP DC is committed to acquire and renovate, or build the necessary facilities to provide a permanent home for all of our schools and provide our students with facilities to properly support all of their academic and enrichment activities. We envision our students rehearsing for an orchestra concert in a music room, performing a dance recital in a home auditorium, eating breakfast and lunch in a full operating cafeteria, or practicing football and lacrosse on home fields. Our vision to provide these spaces must be supported by funding for facilities development.
