Last month, students from KIPP DC College Preparatory’s environmental science class joined representatives from the DC government and the business community for a sneak peek of DC Water’s Brentwood Reservoir’s upcoming Community Solar Farm installation.
During the event, our students had the opportunity to participate in a press conference and tour the solar panel installations. They were thrilled to learn how this project would operate and about opportunities in green industries in DC. According to Forbes, the energy sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the US, which has led to the rising interest in this field among students upon graduation. For example, the Workforce Development Program hosted by the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) offers a livable wage while residents get hands-on experience in green infrastructure.
The community solar project is part of Solar for All, a program led by the District Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) in partnership with the DCSEU. NHT Ingenuity Power (a joint venture of National Housing Trust and Urban Ingenuity) leads the project at DC Water’s Brentwood Reservoir, which will be one of the largest solar projects in DC when it’s completed later this year. This project will give electric bill credits to more than 500 income-qualified families through Solar for All when completed this spring.
