Meet Nihesha Browning, a passionate and dedicated PreK3 Assistant Teacher at KIPP DC Arts & Technology Academy (ATA). With over 13 years of experience working with youth, Nihesha’s journey to education is deeply rooted in her love for the community and her commitment to making a difference in the lives of young children.
Before joining KIPP DC, Nihesha spent years in the court system, providing services to youth transitioning from detention centers or jail. “I worked with them to get their high school diploma, teaching emotional intelligence, and social skills,” she shared. “It was a way for me to give back, especially since I grew up in DC and lost friends and family to the streets.” After taking time to raise her children, she felt drawn back to helping youth, but this time, in the classroom.
When asked what brought her to KIPP DC, Nihesha explained, “I was figuring out where I fit and knew I wanted to work with younger children. That’s when I started subbing, and my first assignment was at ATA 3 years ago. I’ve never missed a day since!” Nihesha’s passion for teaching blossomed as she worked alongside her fellow educators, especially her co-teacher, Ms. McClain, who has played a pivotal role in her growth. “She taught me so much, and that’s when I realized, ‘OK, I can do this. I have the skills and can really pursue this,'” she said.
For Nihesha, teaching young children has taught her valuable life lessons. “Patience, forgiveness, and consistency have been some of the biggest things I’ve learned,” she said. “You think you have patience, but then you work with 3-year-olds, and you learn real quick!” She emphasized how important it is to be there for her students, not just academically, but emotionally as well. “When a child comes in with something heavy on their heart, it’s my job to make them feel safe and loved. This classroom has to be the happiest place they want to be.”
Nihesha’s connection with her students is undeniable. She treats them like her own children, always making sure to fill in the gaps when needed. “I just love how they want to show me everything they do, even the silly things. They just want that attention, that love, and I make sure they get it.” Her nurturing approach creates a classroom where students feel seen, heard, and valued.
One of the most exciting parts of her job is witnessing those “Aha!” moments in her students. Nihesha fondly recalls a recent lesson during “Science Fridays,” where students explored the concept of weight and scales. “Seeing them realize that something can look bigger but be lighter, it was incredible! They’re already connecting it to real life, like when they see the scales at the grocery store.”
Nihesha’s journey at KIPP DC is just beginning. She’s excited to continue her work in education, especially as she looks forward to joining the Special Education Fellowship. “I’m really interested in working with children with autism and helping them through mediation,” she shared. “I’m still figuring it all out, but I’m definitely looking forward to it.”
What sets KIPP DC apart for Nihesha is the strong sense of community. “It’s not just a job; it’s a family. The support from administration, the camaraderie with colleagues, and the sense that everyone is here for the long term—that’s what makes KIPP DC unique.” She feels at home here, and it shows in the way she shows up for her students every day, ready to make an impact.
Nihesha Browning is a teacher who truly embodies the spirit of KIPP DC: dedicated, compassionate, and always striving to make a difference in the lives of her students.
