We’ve almost reached the final stretch of the school year. With only a few weeks left in the 2017-18 school year, we’re excited to explore new initiatives and continuing to plan how to best support students, families, and communities. From the kick-off of the first G.E.M.S. Summit to engaging community organizations and corporate partners—we’ve been busy! Read all of the happenings from April in this month’s KIPP in the Community.
Our Partners in Action – This month, we were happy to welcome new and existing friends and supporters to KIPP DC! On April 13, friends from Citi Bank joined students at KIPP DC Promise Academy to discuss read, interact, and, promote financial literacy with our youngest students. We also had members from PGIM, PNC, and Montgomery County Public Schools stop by to learn the history and philosophy of KIPP DC schools and see teachers, leaders, and students in action! We look forward to engaging new community partners and supporters.
The United Negro College Fund’s Discussion on Student Voice and Racial Equality – On April 26, we attended the UNCF’s Education Summit and had the opportunity to discuss the release of their new report – A Seat at the Table: African American Youth’s Perceptions of K-12 Education. We are grateful to UNCF for their continued advocacy and support of students across the country, including here in the District. We look forward to continuing to be part of such important conversations.
KIPP DC College Preparatory Hosts Third Annual Spring Musical: Hairspray – This month, KIPP DC College Preparatory (KCP) students performed the fun-loving musical, Hairspray! The annual spring musical has become a staple event at the high school. Each year, we’re so impressed by hardworking student performers, creative stage design, and all of the moving parts that come together, so beautifully, for the 3-night show. First Saturday at KIPP DC– Parent Advocacy Meeting – Led by Director of Engagement, Brandon Best, the KIPP DC “First Saturday” series is an opportunity for families, leadership, and the community to work together to identify strategies and to help KIPP DC further its mission. As we plan for the upcoming school year, we look to utilize this space to generate new ideas and initiatives to further engage students, families, and communities
RSVP for KIPP DC’s G.E.M.S. Summit – On May 19, in partnership with G.I.R.L. Inc., we’re hosting young girls and women from across Washington, D.C. for a day of empowerment and self-care. The G.E.M.S. Summit will consist of a series of sessions that highlight topics including professional development, identity, financial fitness, and mindfulness.
