2nd Annual Young Men’s Empowerment Summit

On Saturday, February 9, middle and high school students from KIPP DC and other DC area schools enjoyed a full day of engaging conversation and activity at the 2nd annual KIPP DC Young Men’s Empowerment Summit.

We were extremely proud to welcome nearly 200 young men and their fathers, mentors, and father-figures to a day of empowering discussions, self-help sessions, and mentorship around being productive young men in society. We would also like to extend a special thanks to the D.C. Office of the Attorney General, DC Transit Officers, DC Public Defenders Office, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for joining us for a successful day.

The day kicked off with an opening address from motivational speaker, Mr. Brian Heat. He set the tone of the day by challenging students and fathers to “find and unleash their potential”. With that framing in mind, participants moved through a series of different sessions that touched on topics including:

  • Knowing Your Rights
  • Career Exposure
  • Financial Literacy
  • Barbershop and Sexual Hygiene Conversation
  • Middle School Transitions & High School Transitions

In the afternoon, students got their limbs moving with some physical activity! Students had the opportunity to choose from Nike 3-on-3 basketball tournament, video gaming tournament, and graffiti art session.
