Our diversity, equity, and inclusion work aims to identify and confront institutional racism to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization and public school system. We are committed to confronting and reshaping mindsets, practices, and policies to create an organizational culture that actively reflects and champions anti-racist beliefs, practices, and policies in our everyday work.
Vision for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at KIPP DC
In order to identify and confront institutional racism to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization and public school system, we will:
- Define our equity work to understand what we are trying to accomplish and how we will measure our success.
- Creating diversity, equity, and inclusion systems by allocating resources to support our efforts.
- Create space for learning for all of our staff to empower them to champion anti-racist beliefs, practices, and policies in our everyday work.
- Re-imagine the student experience to validate and affirm their identities.
- Revise our talent systems through clear hiring and promotion policies and procedures.
Equity Work in Action
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development
Diversity, equity, and inclusion learning is a key component of our staff’s experience and the work we do for our students and families. Staff regularly engage throughout the year in professional development and learning on diversity, equity, and inclusion topics through designated Development and Wellness days, summer professional development, and other opportunities throughout the year to ensure we continue to promote anti-racist and anti-bias practices across our organization.
Culturally Responsive Curriculum & Instructional Practices
What we teach and how we teach matters. KIPP DC is committed to learning experiences that celebrate and empower our students’ identities, and promoting anti-racist and anti-bias practices in our classrooms. In partnership with students and families, teachers and leader working groups across our organization continue to examine our curriculum and instructional practices to create a more culturally relevant and responsive curriculum. Our staff engage in the development of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching strategies and focus on methods that engage students through a trauma-informed and healing-centered lens.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition
The KIPP DC Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coalition is a group individuals across race and gender within our organization – school teams, student support teams, and headquarters – will partner with senior leaders, as well as school and headquarters leaders to drive KIPP DC’s anti-racism work forward. The DEI Coalition is composed of members of the Advisory Committee and the Equity Fellowship.
Advisory Committee
The goal of the Advisory Committee is to drive and support KIPP DC’s DEI efforts and engage others in learning and transformational shifts in practices and policies that reflect KIPP DC’s commitment to anti-racism.
We are not currently accepting applications for the Advisory Committee.
Equity Fellowship
The Equity Fellowship is a year-long opportunity for school and headquarters staff to come together to learn and grow in diversity, equity, and inclusion practices by participating in monthly learning sessions and training.
